Survivor
by Roberta Kray
2018
Lolly Bruce grew up on the tough Mansfield estate with a mentally ill mother and no one to rely on but herself. When crime boss Mal Fury hears of a young woman who might be linked to his daughter who vanished years ago, Lolly is dragged into a dangerous search that could rewrite her whole past.
Series background & context
The Lolly Bruce books follow a young woman who grew up on the Mansfield estate, a grim patch of London where police sirens and family feuds are part of the soundtrack. From the start, Lolly is presented as a survivor – quick, wary and shaped by a childhood spent looking after herself.
In Survivor we meet Lolly as the daughter of Angela Bruce, whose mental illness and outbursts have left Lolly effectively raising herself. Elsewhere, East End hard man Mal Fury is still obsessed with the disappearance of his toddler daughter Kay years earlier. When an investigator uncovers a link between Kay and Lolly, two broken families are pushed onto a collision course.
The truth about Lolly’s past sits at the heart of the mystery. As Mal digs through old lies and Lolly fights to keep control of her present, both characters are forced to confront what loyalty means when blood ties are tangled up with violence and neglect.
In Stolen the focus shifts to Lolly’s life after she has spent time living in comfort, far from the estate that formed her. Circumstances drag her back to the East End and to earning money in the grey areas of the law. When Mal escapes custody, convinced that Kay might still be alive, Lolly teams up with investigator Nick Trent to chase rumours and half-remembered faces.
Their hunt pulls them through smart new developments and forgotten corners of London, connecting the glamorous life Lolly briefly tasted with the brutal world she thought she had left behind. The question of what really happened to Kay, and what that says about Lolly’s own identity, hangs over every choice they make.
Across both books the series stays close to Lolly’s point of view, mixing family drama with gangland tension. Expect estate stairwells, shabby pubs and high-end hideouts, plus a heroine who has learned never to rely on anyone – but who may finally have to decide who she can trust.
