The Honeytrap: Part 1
by Roberta Kray
2015
Reluctant to use honeytraps in his struggling detective agency, Harry Lind has to step in himself when no male decoy is available. Posing as bait for a cheating husband, he runs into old acquaintance Ellen Shaw and realises her ties to feared gangster Danny Street could drag him into something far more dangerous.
Series background & context
The Honeytrap series is a four-part digital serial that follows private investigator Harry Lind as one job drags him deep into East End gangland. The story plays out across short, punchy instalments, but it reads like one continuous thriller when taken together.
Harry is a former cop working as a PI in Kellston, an East London neighbourhood that features throughout Roberta Kray’s novels. He runs a small agency with a partner and takes on whatever work keeps the lights on, even the kind of honeytrap assignments he secretly despises.
When a male decoy is unavailable, Harry reluctantly agrees to act as bait himself for a suspicious wife. That decision brings him face to face with Ellen Shaw, a woman from his past who has learned to survive by attaching herself to dangerous men, and with Danny Street, one of the area’s most feared gangsters.
What starts as a simple test of a husband’s loyalty quickly turns into something darker. A fellow honeytrapper, Sylvie, disappears, a woman connected to the case ends up dead, and Harry finds himself squeezed between the police, the press and the Streets, unsure who is lying and who is simply scared.
Reporter Jess Vaughan, first seen working with Harry in The Lost and Nothing But Trouble, is pulled in when Sylvie’s friends beg for help. Her contacts and instincts give the investigation reach beyond Harry’s usual world, but they also make it harder for either of them to walk away when the work becomes personal.
Across the four parts the series builds a tight, escalating mystery around missing women, shifting loyalties and the hidden costs of exploiting people’s weaknesses for money. Expect clipped dialogue, grim backstreets, and a constant friction between Harry’s battered conscience and the brutal logic of the world he works in.
Read the parts in order – from The Honeytrap: Part 1 through to Part 4 – for a complete, high-stakes case that rewards being devoured in one sitting.
