Series background & context

Lochguard Highland Dragons moves Jessie Donovan's dragon-shifter world into Scotland. The clan has its own leaders, families, grudges, healers, and Protectors, and the Highland setting gives the series a slightly different feel from Stonefire. It is still steamy paranormal romance, but there is more clan-wide family chaos, more teasing, and a strong sense that everyone knows everyone else's business.

The series begins with The Dragon's Dilemma, where Holly Anderson enters Lochguard's sacrifice program for her father's sake and falls for Fraser MacKenzie, not the dragon chosen for her. That first conflict captures a recurring theme: clan rules are meant to keep order, but love has a habit of pointing out where the rules are unfair.

Lochguard is big on second chances.

The books move through a wide cast. The Dragon Guardian pairs runaway, pregnant Gina MacDonald with Fergus MacKenzie. The Dragon's Heart gives older characters Lorna MacKenzie and Ross Anderson a chance at love after loss and illness. The Dragon Warrior follows Grant McFarland and Faye MacKenzie through a traitor hunt, while later stories bring in doctors, teachers, artists, lost family, memory loss, and human allies.

The clan itself becomes part of the appeal. Finlay Stewart and Arabella MacLeod's family, the MacKenzies, the Protectors, and the children all help Lochguard feel lived-in. Donovan often lets humor sit beside danger, especially when relatives, triplets, and stubborn elders crowd into the same scene.

The ongoing stakes include dragon hunters, internal betrayal, missing supplies, political pressure, and the broader question of how much dragons should open their lives to humans. Start with The Dragon's Dilemma if you want the clean series arc. Readers coming from Stonefire will also enjoy seeing how the two clans compare, clash, and eventually fit into the same wider dragon future.
