Living Ted Books in Order

The Living Ted books take a perfect childhood comfort object, the teddy bear, and turn it into a problem on a world-threatening scale. The series follows siblings Lisa Marie and Vernon after a trip to a teddy bear shop goes spectacularly wrong. Their new bears come to life, and it turns out they are not the only ones.

Soon there are living teddy bears everywhere.

That sounds cute for about two seconds. Then Barry Hutchison starts having fun with it. Some of the bears are allies, some are monstrous, and one of the biggest threats is Grizz, an evil teddy with grand plans and no interest in being adorable. The books pile on chases, fights, bizarre inventions, and increasingly large disasters, while still keeping the story anchored in the bickering, loyal relationship between the two kids at the center.

This is funny horror for younger readers in the most direct sense. The bears are ridiculous, the action is loud, and the illustrations help keep the mood lively, but the stories still know how to build tension. When the villains escalate, the books escalate with them, moving from household chaos to much bigger threats without losing the comic tone.

Bearvis and the Duds add extra personality to the series, and a lot of the charm comes from how the human and teddy characters bounce off one another. Nobody in these books gets to have a calm day for very long.

So if you want Barry Hutchison in energetic middle grade mode, with lots of jokes and enough monster mayhem to keep things exciting, Living Ted is a very easy recommendation. It is quick, noisy, and delightfully committed to the idea that teddy bears can be both funny and terrifying.
