Dan Deadman Space Detective Books in Order

The Dan Deadman Space Detective books take the wider Space Team universe and push it into something darker, stranger, and a lot more noir. Dan is a private investigator in an alien city called Down Here, a place full of crooked cops, criminal gangs, dimensional weirdness, and problems no sensible detective would take on.

Dan is also dead.

That matters less than you might think, at least to him. He still takes cases, still makes bad calls, and still gets dragged into bigger messes than he planned for. The joke is that he has the voice of a hardboiled detective and the luck of a man who really should stay indoors. Around him are allies like Ollie and Artur, and together they stumble through murders, portals, monsters, conspiracies, and the sort of civic breakdown that makes ordinary detective work feel quaint.

The series mixes several modes at once. Part of it is detective fiction, because each book gives Dan a case to chase. Part of it is horror comedy, because the threats can be grotesque and the punch lines arrive at exactly the wrong time. Part of it is science fiction, because the whole setting runs on alien species, odd tech, and a city built from grime, improvisation, and danger.

Down Here does a lot of heavy lifting. It feels crowded, mean, and thoroughly lived in, which helps the books hold together even when the plots get delightfully bizarre. Hell-beasts can rampage through the street, portals can open where they should not, and a murder case can suddenly threaten whole civilizations, yet the city remains the anchor.

If Space Team is the broader, louder adventure wing of Barry J Hutchison's adult fiction, Dan Deadman is the grubby back alley where the lights flicker and something with too many teeth is waiting. It is funny, gross, fast-moving, and much sharper than its shambling hero would probably like to admit.
