Series background & context
The Living In... books are dark contemporary romances built around secrecy, desire, and the private selves people work very hard to keep hidden. The series titles alone, Living in Shadow, Living in Sin, and Living in Secret, tell you these are stories about what happens when that hidden life starts to show.
These books feel intimate rather than sprawling. The emotional focus is close, sometimes claustrophobic in a good way, because so much depends on whether the leads can be honest about what they want and what they fear. Professors, club owners, younger heroines, and complicated histories all come into play.
What links them is not one single plot but a shared emotional question. Can two people build something real when both are used to hiding the most important parts of themselves? Ashenden tends to answer that with a lot of chemistry, some serious resistance, and a willingness to let her characters stay messy for a while.
If you want her more inward-looking, sensual, emotionally risky work, this is a very solid corner of the bibliography.
