Series background & context
Linx & Bogie is one of Hunter's smaller series, but it has a very clear identity. These books mix ghost story, paranormal mystery, and a little old-school detective energy. The central pair are unusual in the best way, Linx Maxwell, a young artist and medium still learning what her gift means, and Frank Bogle, the dead detective who ends up attached to her whether either of them likes it or not.
Their dynamic is the reason to show up. Linx is living, creative, impatient, and trying to make sense of a world that suddenly includes far more dead people than she would prefer. Bogie is a ghost with a detective's instincts and a strong opinion on almost everything. The books get a lot of mileage out of the contrast between them, and the banter helps keep the supernatural parts light on their feet.
The setting matters too. There is a breezy California feel to the series, but it is threaded through with noir. In A Ghost in the Glamour, Linx and Bogie move from origin-story territory into a cold case that lets them start working together for real. A Bogie in the Boat pushes them into another mystery when a body turns up in a canal and the dead do what the dead in this series often do, refuse to stay quiet.
For all the humor, these books are still mysteries. The crimes need solving. Ghosts have unfinished business. Linx has to decide how far she is willing to lean into a gift that keeps disrupting any chance of a normal life. Bogie, meanwhile, has his own unfinished edges, because being dead does not magically fix who you were when you were alive.
This is not a big epic series with huge armies and mythology. It is more intimate than that, and that is part of the charm. The books care about atmosphere, odd details, and the strange practical problems that come with being haunted by a detective who thinks he still has a badge.
If you like paranormal mysteries with a little wit, a little melancholy, and a pair of leads who never quite stop getting on each other's nerves, Linx & Bogie is an easy series to slip into.
