Series background & context
Elemental Covenant takes two fan-favorite characters from the larger Elemental universe and gives them a new job to do. Carwyn ap Bryn and Brigid Connor are already an established couple when this series begins, which makes these books feel different from Hunter's more traditional romance arcs. The question is not whether they belong together. It is how they are going to survive the next disaster.
Carwyn and Brigid are elemental vampires, mated partners, and, by the time this series starts, the kind of pair other immortals call when something has gone badly wrong. They find the lost, chase bad leads, step into clan conflicts, and generally make trouble for anyone hoping to keep a dangerous secret buried. Their partnership gives the books a strong detective-series feel, even though the cases happen inside a supernatural world.
Each book sends them into a different problem. Saint's Passage opens with a disappearance. Martyr's Promise takes them into the forests and coast of Northern California when a young woman goes missing and old alliances start to strain. Paladin's Kiss folds a wedding, a corporate mystery, and vampire society together in New Orleans. Bishop's Flight heads to Las Vegas for a kidnapping case. Tin God raises the stakes even further by crossing into larger Elemental Legacy territory.
What makes the series especially satisfying is the marriage at its center. Carwyn is warm, funny, and impossible to ignore. Brigid is sharper, harder, and often the one actually keeping things moving. They know each other's flaws. They fight well together. They trust each other without the books needing to repeatedly prove it. That gives the mysteries room to breathe.
The wider immortal world is still full of power struggles, old families, grudges, and politics, so no case is ever only a case. Every missing person has connections. Every city has its own dangerous history. Every favor comes with a price. Because Carwyn and Brigid know so many people across the universe, the series also works as a reunion space for other beloved characters.
If you want paranormal mystery with an established couple, good banter, emotional weight, and the constant risk that one investigation might set off something much bigger, Elemental Covenant is a great corner of Hunter's world to explore.
