Linsey Miller Books in Order

Linsey Miller was born in Arkansas, where she studied biology before building a career as a fiction writer. Her early work life included time as a crime lab intern, a neuroscience lab assistant, and a pharmacy technician, jobs that left her with a practical interest in science, bodies, and the ways systems can affect people.

She later earned an MFA in Fiction from Wichita State University. It gave her space to bring together the interests that run through her books: magic with rules, difficult moral choices, queer characters, and people trying to make a life inside unfair worlds.

Science and fantasy make a natural pair in her work.

Miller's debut, Mask of Shadows, introduces Sal Leon, a genderfluid thief who enters a deadly contest for a place among the queen's assassins. Its sequel, Ruin of Stars, follows Sal into the consequences of winning, where revenge, loyalty, and the return of dangerous magic make every choice harder. The duology is built for readers who like fast action, court politics, and a hero who has good reasons not to trust anyone in power.

Her standalone fantasy Belle Révolte takes a different route. Two young women trade places so each can pursue the education she has been denied: one wants to become a physician, while the other wants to study magic. Their private bargain opens onto a larger story about war, class, gender expectations, and the cost of magic.

In What We Devour, Miller heads into darker territory. Lorena Adler is an undertaker with a rare kind of magic, and she is pulled into a struggle involving the crown, sacrifice, and a dangerous Door that demands more than anyone wants to give. The novel was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award, and it shows Miller's interest in fantasy worlds where personal survival is tied to political power.

She also writes outside secondary-world fantasy. The Game is a contemporary teen thriller set during a high school Assassin game that turns into a real murder case. Her Disney Princes novels, beginning with Prince of Song & Sea, revisit familiar fairy tales from the princes' points of view, adding curses, mysteries, and more room for those characters to make their own decisions.

Across these books, Miller often writes about people boxed in by class, family, old rules, or institutions that claim to know what is best for them. Her characters tend to push back, sometimes carefully and sometimes with a knife, a spell, or a very risky plan.

Miller lives in Texas and writes about science and magic wherever there is coffee. Alongside her novels, her short fiction has appeared in Being Ace, The House Where Death Lives, and This Is How We Roll.
