Author bio
Linda Broday was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, and grew up with a love for stories set against wide-open country and hard choices. As a girl, she watched television westerns and found herself drawn to the lawmen, outlaws, tough women, and ordinary families trying to build a life in difficult places.
Those early stories stuck.
Books also gave Broday a way to travel far beyond her own small-town surroundings. She has said that history, museums, libraries, and the old West all fed her imagination. The Texas Panhandle, where she lives, has become an especially important part of her writing life. Its plains, weather, ranch country, and long memories show up again and again in the worlds she creates.
Broday published her first western romance novel in 2001. Since then, she has written historical romances and short fiction centered on Texas and the American West. Her books often begin with people who have been knocked sideways by life: a rancher carrying grief, a woman running from danger, an outlaw hoping for another chance, or a child who needs a safe home.
Home is a big deal in these stories.
In Knight on the Texas Plains, a drifter unexpectedly becomes responsible for a baby and meets a woman fleeing a brutal past. Texas Mail Order Bride follows a determined woman who arrives in Battle Creek expecting a husband, only to find that the supposed groom never sent for her. In To Love a Texas Ranger, family loyalty and the law pull Texas Ranger Sam Legend in opposite directions. And The Outlaw's Mail Order Bride brings a scarred woman to a settlement of former outlaws trying to live honestly.
Her books blend romance with chases, secrets, cattle country, small communities, and the practical work of getting through another day. The men may wear boots and carry guns, but Broday is just as interested in the women who refuse to be pushed aside. Her characters often have painful histories, yet the stories make room for friendship, family, forgiveness, and a second try at happiness.
She also writes beyond the familiar ranch-and-range setting. Wildwood Healer, set in East Texas during the Great Depression, follows an herbal healer who helps people facing hunger, abuse, and fear. It shows the same interest in ordinary people looking out for one another, this time in a different period of Texas history.
Broday has been a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She has also received several reader and romance-writing honors over the years. Still, her public writing about herself tends to come back to the basics: family, history, books, and the pull of the old West.
These days, she remains in the Texas Panhandle. She is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she has described herself as the storyteller and family historian in her own household. That sense of keeping stories alive runs through her fiction too.
