Light & Shadow Books in Order

Light & Shadow is JC Andrijeski's portal-guarding urban fantasy series, and it opens with a strong premise. Alexis is a Lightbringer, one of a race tasked with protecting the portals that connect different worlds. That means her job is part border guard, part hunter, part last line of defense against gods, monsters, demons, vampires, and whatever else decides Earth looks interesting.

It is a lonely assignment.

The books start from that loneliness and then break it open. Something is killing Lightbringers, the portals are behaving badly, and Alexis can no longer trust the systems that were supposed to keep the worlds stable. Into that crisis comes Cal, a Traveler, one of the beings who can move more freely between dimensions. He is helpful, mysterious, and very much not easy to read, which makes him exactly the kind of ally Alexis probably needs and definitely cannot fully trust.

That push-pull is a big part of the series appeal. The world-building gives Andrijeski room to throw a lot at the page, portal lore, interdimensional politics, creatures from different realms, and a mounting sense that the old order is failing. But the story still stays centered on Alexis and Cal, and on the question of whether cooperation is possible when both sides are carrying secrets.

The tone sits comfortably between supernatural suspense and paranormal romance, with enough action to keep things moving. Readers who like hidden systems, magical patrol work, and enemies-to-lovers energy will probably click with it quickly. Alexis is competent, stubborn, and used to carrying too much alone. Cal is exactly the kind of complication that makes a series run.

By the later books, the conflict is bigger than a few broken portals. It becomes a fight over who gets to control access, knowledge, and power between worlds.
