Where should I start?
If you want a dark psychic mystery first: Black In White → Black As Night → Black On Black
If you want the biggest epic world first: Dark Seers → Rogue Seers → Shadow Seer
If you want angels, demons, and noir: I, Angel → Bad Angel → Angel on Fire
If you want dystopian vampire detective stories: Vampire Detective Midnight → Eyes of Ice → The Prescient
If you want something lighter and myth-heavy: Thor → Loki → Tyr
Author bio
JC Andrijeski was born in Los Gatos, California, and her life has never stayed in one lane for very long. She has said she has lived all over the United States, and that wide-angle sense of place shows up all through her fiction. Her books jump from Los Angeles to New York, from alternate Earths to ruined futures, but they still feel rooted in real streets, real pressure, and very human bad decisions.
Before fiction took over full time, she built a background in journalism and political history, and she holds a master's degree in political history. That mix matters. Even in her most supernatural stories, there is usually a strong sense that governments, institutions, propaganda, money, and old grudges are shaping what happens behind the scenes.
She has also spent significant time abroad. By her own account, she has lived in Europe, Australia, and Asia, including a few years in India and around five years in Thailand. That travel seems to feed the scope of her work.
Her stories are rarely small.
A lot of readers first meet her through Black In White, the opening Quentin Black novel, where a forensic psychologist gets pulled into the orbit of a brilliant and deeply dangerous psychic detective. Others start with Rook, or its later retitled form Dark Seers, which opens her sprawling Bridge and Sword world of seers, prophecy, and apocalyptic politics. If you want a different flavor, Vampire Detective Midnight brings a futuristic New York homicide beat to the mix, while I, Angel leans into demon hunting, Hollywood weirdness, and noir energy.
What ties those books together is less the setting than the feel. Andrijeski likes hidden worlds sitting right next to ordinary ones. She likes antiheroes, damaged alliances, strange power structures, and characters who are trying to do the right thing while carrying way too much history. Romance is often part of the engine, but so are investigations, conspiracies, and the question of what power does to people.
You can see that range in books like The Culling, with its alien-occupied Earth and survivor heroine Jet Tetsuo, or Thor, which turns Norse gods loose in the modern world with a lighter, more playful tone. Even when the setup changes, her fiction tends to circle the same big concerns: identity, loyalty, survival, love under pressure, and the cost of choosing one side in a messy world.
She has also published under the name Julie Light, and more recently has written in other corners of fantasy romance as well. Whatever the label, her work usually blends speculative ideas with mystery, danger, and emotionally intense relationships.
These days, she lives in Los Angeles, California, and writes full time. She has said she enjoys being back in the United States, and gets a kick out of living in Hollywood and digging into the city's history. That feels fitting. Her books are full of motion, collision, and people trying to reinvent themselves, which is a pretty good match for Los Angeles.
