Where Life Takes You
by Claudia Burgoa
2013
Becca Trent grew up with a cruel mother and a spiteful stepsister who stole everything from her, including her first love. After a tragedy and years of nightmares, only therapy and her steadfast friend Dan keep her afloat, until the past returns and threatens the fragile life she has built.
Series background & context
The Life duology is where Claudia Burgoa first leaned all the way into heavy, character-focused romance. These books follow Becca Trent, a young woman trying to rebuild herself after a childhood that left more scars than memories.
In Where Life Takes You, Becca grows up with a cruel, neglectful mother and a stepsister who turns every day into a new kind of hurt. After a tragedy rips through that already fragile family, Becca buries the past as deeply as she can and leans on therapy, work, and her loyal best friend Dan to stay afloat.
The second book, Next to You, continues her journey as old ghosts resurface and she is forced to decide whether she will keep letting the past define her or risk opening herself up to love and a different future.
The tone is more intense than in some of Burgoa’s later rom-com leaning series. Trauma, nightmares, and complicated grief all play major roles, but so do small, quiet acts of care from the people who refuse to give up on Becca.
If you are looking for early-career Claudia that is raw, emotional, and anchored in a single heroine’s growth, the Life series is a powerful place to start.
