Something Like Love

by Claudia Burgoa

2022

Down on her luck and close to losing her business, the heroine reluctantly agrees to a fake engagement with Burke St. James, a wealthy womanizer who needs a fiancée to seal a make-or-break deal, only to find that pretending to be in love is dangerously easy.

Series background & context

Against All Odds: The St. James Family zooms in on a wealthy Seattle dynasty that keeps colliding with love at the worst possible moments. These books spin out of the wider Against All Odds series but can be read as their own quartet about the St. James siblings and cousins.

The stories tend to start with a mess. In Until Next Time a burned-out single mom is accidentally exposed on a popular relationship podcast, only to reconnect with her brother’s former best friend and a secret billionaire determined to help whether she wants him to or not.

Later books push other St. James relatives into equally inconvenient situations, from fake engagements that will save a business but wreck carefully guarded hearts, to best friend’s siblings who were always off limits until the rules quietly changed.

Across the subseries you will see familiar tropes, best friend’s brother, secret billionaire, fake dating, and forced proximity, but anchored in a big family that shows up in group chats, holidays, and ill-timed bits of advice. The St. Jameses work hard, play harder, and are terrible at minding their own business.

Tonally these books lean more rom-com than tearjerker, with plenty of banter and modern dating chaos, but they still touch on grief, starting over as a single parent, and the pressure that comes with public success.

If you want an entry point into Against All Odds that feels like its own mini-series, the St. James books are a smart place to start.
