Author bio

Leo J Maloney was born in Massachusetts, grew up there, and graduated from Northeastern University. Long before he published thrillers, he spent more than thirty years in black ops, taking on highly secretive missions in some of the most dangerous hot spots in the world.

That is not the usual road into fiction.

When he left that life, he did not drift into a quiet retirement. He worked in independent films and television commercials, both on camera and behind the scenes, and he has seven film credits as an actor, producer, technical advisor, and assistant director. He also kept building businesses, which fits the rest of his story.

Cars were one of the constants. Maloney bought and sold classic American muscle cars for years, and that interest grew into invitation-only indoor car shows in the Northeast and a high-end limousine service built around unusual vehicles. He later ran security and private investigation companies too, adding another layer of real-world experience that shows up in the practical feel of his fiction.

He did not come to writing from a classroom or a newsroom. He came to it from operations, logistics, travel, cover stories, and jobs where small details could change everything.

His best-known work centers on Dan Morgan, the former CIA and black ops operative at the heart of Termination Orders, Silent Assassin, and Black Skies. Those books are fast, direct, and full of missions that stretch from Washington and New York to Russia, Turkey, and beyond. Readers who click with Maloney usually come for the momentum, but they also stay for the mix of tradecraft, family pressure, and the constant question of who can still be trusted.

That background also helps explain why his thrillers rarely lean on superhero-style invincibility. His protagonists are capable, but the stories spend a lot of time on planning, consequences, and the messy overlap between official power and unofficial action. The tension often comes from divided loyalties as much as gunfire.

His shorter books, including Twelve Hours, For Duty and Honor, and Dark Territory, show another side of his pacing. They strip the setup down to a city under siege, a prison escape, or a mission gone wrong on the Trans-Siberian Railway. If you like thrillers that get to the point and stay there, those books are a good snapshot of what he does well.

He later widened that world with books that give more room to Dan's daughter Alex. In Angle of Attack, Storm Front, and Blast Wave, the focus shifts to a new lead, but the appeal stays familiar: covert teams, global threats, tight deadlines, and danger arriving from more than one direction at once. The Dan Morgan books and the Alex Morgan books are closely connected, which makes his bibliography easy to enter from either the original series or the spin-off.

Now he lives in Venice, Florida. Writing seems to take up most of his attention, but his background still reads like that of someone who is always looking at the next project, the next idea, or the next classic car worth bringing back to life.
