Series background & context

The Legendborn Cycle is a contemporary young adult fantasy set in a version of North Carolina where old stories are not safely in the past. It begins with sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews, who joins a residential program at UNC-Chapel Hill soon after her mother's death, hoping distance will offer some relief.

Instead, Bree witnesses a demon attack and finds the Legendborn, a secretive group whose members descend from Arthurian knights and protect the human world. When a failed attempt to erase her memory reveals her own power, Bree enters their orbit to investigate a connection between the group and her mother's death.

The series treats the campus and the surrounding South as more than scenery. The Order's rules, traditions, and sense of inherited entitlement shape every choice Bree has to make. Deonn puts Arthurian legend in conversation with Black family history, ancestral memory, and the question of who is allowed to belong in spaces built to exclude them.

Nothing about the old legends is neutral here.

Bree is the heart of the books, but she rarely has to face the danger alone. Her closest relationships include Nick Davis, a Legendborn who has pulled away from the Order, and Selwyn Kane, Nick's tightly controlled mageguard. Friendships, shifting trust, and attraction all matter, even when demons and ancient oaths are demanding attention.

This is one continuing story, not a set of standalones. Bloodmarked follows Bree as war approaches, the Order tries to control her, and she and her friends make a desperate move to save Nick. In Oathbound, Bree's choice to leave the Order puts her in a dangerous bargain with the Shadow King while the fractured Round Table faces a larger crisis.

Expect secret societies, training, investigations, romantic tension, and battles, alongside grief and hard questions about racism, power, and history. The pace can be intense, but Bree's search for agency gives the series its steady center.
