Author bio

Tracy Deonn grew up in central North Carolina, where fantasy stories and Southern food were both part of the landscape. She began writing early, completing her first short story when she was nine. The pull toward speculative stories was there from the start.

She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in communication and performance studies. Her education gave her a close look at performance, language, and the ways people tell stories together, skills that later show up in her layered, dialogue-driven fiction.

Before publishing novels, Deonn worked in live theater, video game production, and K-12 education. She also taught theater and taught creative and academic writing at the university level.

She came to fiction after building a working life around stories in several other forms.

Her first published piece was "Black Girl, Becoming," an essay included in the 2018 anthology Our Stories, Our Voices. The essay helped bring her to the attention of an editor, and Deonn then sent out an unfinished young adult fantasy manuscript. That manuscript became Legendborn.

Published in 2020, Legendborn introduces Bree Matthews, a grieving teen who arrives at a university program in North Carolina and finds a hidden world of demons, magic, and descendants of Arthurian knights. Deonn pairs that familiar legend with Southern Black history, ancestral memory, and questions about who gets to inherit power. The book became a New York Times bestseller and received the Coretta Scott King-John Steptoe Award for New Talent.

The series continued with Bloodmarked, which widens Bree's magical training and places more pressure on her friendships, family ties, and role in the conflict around the Legendborn. In Oathbound, the dangers grow beyond the Order as Bree faces a bargain that tests her independence. Readers often come for the modern Arthurian setup, then stay for Bree's determination and the relationships around her.

Grief sits near the center of Deonn's work, but it is not the only thing on the page. Her books also make room for first love, chosen family, anger, racism, history, and the tricky business of claiming an identity that powerful institutions would rather define for you.

Her writing has also appeared in anthologies, including From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. She was a featured expert, co-writer, and consulting producer for the 2019 fandom documentary series Looking for Leia.

When she isn't writing, Deonn reads comics and fanfic, dreams up magic systems, and looks out for ginger-flavored treats. It fits a writer whose worlds make room for fandom, big questions, and everyday pleasures.
