Legacy of Love

by Joanna Trollope

1983

Spanning three generations, this saga follows Charlotte, who flees Victorian respectability for love and danger in Afghanistan, and the granddaughters who inherit her legend. From a Scottish castle to the Second World War home front, each woman must choose between safety and the fierce freedom Charlotte claimed.

Series background & context

The Legacy Saga gathers two linked historical novels, Legacy of Love and A Second Legacy, written under Joanna Trollope’s Caroline Harvey pseudonym. Together they follow several generations of the Bewick family, from Victorian Afghanistan to late‑twentieth‑century Britain and back to a very different Kabul.

The sequence begins with Legacy of Love, in which beautiful, restless Charlotte marries a solid army officer largely to escape the narrow respectability of Richmond. She persuades her quieter sister Emily to accompany her to Kabul, then part of the British presence in Afghanistan. There Charlotte falls in love not just with the landscape but with Alexander Bewick, a charismatic adventurer whose recklessness mirrors her own hunger for experience.

As Kabul slides into rebellion and bloodshed, Charlotte’s choices between husband and lover, safety and passion, leave deep marks on everyone around her. Later sections of the same book pick up the story with Alexandra, Charlotte’s granddaughter, growing up in a gloomy Scottish castle in the shadow of her famous ancestor, and then with Alexandra’s daughter Cara on the eve of the Second World War. Each young woman must decide how much of Charlotte’s daring to claim, and how much to resist, as war, work and love reshape their lives.

A Second Legacy moves the family story into the 1960s and 1980s. Alexia, a descendant of Charlotte, leaves school feeling disappointingly ordinary beside her political, high‑achieving parents. A job sewing bespoke curtains for fashionable clients slowly reveals her practical gifts. When a crumbling Scottish castle comes to her as a surprise inheritance, she seizes the chance to build a hotel, raise her daughter Carly and make a genuinely independent life.

The later part of the novel centres on Carly, now a young woman in the late 1980s, who is fascinated by the family legends about Charlotte’s time in Afghanistan. Joining a documentary crew heading to the region, she encounters refugee camps and the aftermath of conflict first‑hand. Her romantic hopes do not quite go to plan, but the trip gives her a clear sense of purpose and a more adult understanding of the courage and selfishness threaded through her family history.

Across both books, the Legacy Saga offers sweeping adventure, romance and social history, but it always comes back to women’s interior lives: their need for work that matters, their complicated ties to parents and daughters, and the pull between safe marriages and risky freedom. Readers who start with Legacy of Love and continue straight into A Second Legacy will see how the same questions echo down the generations, even as the settings shift from Victorian battlefields to Scottish hotels and modern Kabul.
