Author bio
Lee Goldberg was born on February 20, 1962, in Oakland, California, and he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was raised around deadlines and show business chatter, his parents worked as journalists, and TV was never just background noise in the house. He later went to UCLA, earned a communications degree, and paid the bills by freelancing about film and television, the kind of work that teaches you how stories get made and sold.
His first big publishing break came while he was still in college, when he was hired to write a men’s adventure novel for a paperback line. He used the pen name Ian Ludlow and wrote a vigilante thriller that later became the four-part Jury series, a fast, tough story about justice that doesn’t wait for the system to catch up.
Then TV happened.
Goldberg teamed up with fellow writer William Rabkin early on, and the two built long, overlapping careers in television and novels. Over the years he’s written and produced across mysteries, action shows, and classic detective adaptations. His TV writing has earned major mystery-award nominations, including an Edgar nomination tied to his work on A Nero Wolfe Mystery, and he’s also been nominated for a Shamus Award for his fiction.
He writes like someone who’s spent time on a set.
If you know him from books, you’ve probably seen him in “tie-in” mode: taking a beloved TV character and giving them a new case that still feels like the show. His long run of Monk novels keeps Adrian Monk’s anxious brilliance front and center, and his Diagnosis Murder books let Dr. Mark Sloan and detective Steve Sloan solve crimes where the medical clue matters as much as the motive.
He also likes to write about writing, and he’s unusually specific about the nuts and bolts. In Successful Television Writing and his behind-the-scenes nonfiction about pilots and unmade shows, he talks shop in a way that’s useful even if you’ve never set foot in a writers’ room.
When he’s writing original crime fiction, Goldberg tends to lean into smart, fast stories that know their setting. Watch Me Die follows a security guard who tries to live out his private-eye fantasies and stumbles into a very real mess. The Eve Ronin novels, starting with Lost Hills, are sharper and more procedural, with a young homicide detective who’s promoted early and has to prove she belongs, case after case, in a place where everybody’s watching.
He’s also happy to pivot genres without losing his voice. The Dead Man stories go full pulp-horror, with short, propulsive episodes built around supernatural threats. And in the Sharpe and Walker books, starting with Malibu Burning, he brings the same brisk pace to arson investigations and disaster-scale crimes.
If you like fiction that winks at itself, the Ian Ludlow thrillers, kicked off by True Fiction, drop a bestselling author into situations that feel like they were stolen from his own books. If you want something grittier and stranger, Calico puts a fallen detective in the Mojave desert, chasing a case that won’t stay neatly in the present. These days he’s based in Calabasas, California, and he still moves between TV and novels without treating them like separate worlds.
