True Fiction

2018

Bestselling novelist Ian Ludlow expects a comfortable life until a real conspiracy drags him into danger. With only his tough assistant, Margo French, to keep him grounded, Ian has to survive a plot that feels stolen from his own books.

Series background & context

The Ian Ludlow thrillers are built around a fun, slightly wicked idea: what if a bestselling writer of action novels had to live one. Ian Ludlow is famous for over-the-top, globe-trotting books, the kind where the hero always has a plan and the explosions land on cue. Ian, the real person, is not that guy.

He’s successful and confident on the page, but in real life he’s more likely to argue about deadlines than disarm a bomb. That’s why it’s so satisfying when trouble finds him anyway, and he’s forced to improvise with the tools he actually has, curiosity, stubbornness, and a talent for spotting story logic. He keeps trying to narrate his way to safety, and the world keeps refusing to behave like a plot outline. Fiction starts to feel dangerously close to fact.

The other key character is Margo French, his assistant and the person who has to keep Ian functional. She’s practical, resourceful, and far less impressed by Ian’s ego than his fans are. Their partnership gives the series its rhythm: Ian talks big, Margo does the work, and together they stumble into conspiracies that are much bigger than a publishing contract dispute.

The books mix Hollywood inside jokes with real peril. A research trip, a fan encounter, or a routine appearance can tilt into something lethal, and the story usually jumps quickly from Los Angeles comfort to international chaos. One moment you’re watching Ian try to charm his way out of a mess, the next you’re in a chase across unfamiliar streets, trying to figure out who is running the game and why Ian is suddenly important.

Even with the humor, the series takes its tension seriously. Ian and Margo get hurt, get scared, and make bad calls, and the consequences stick. At the same time, the books never lose that playful spark, the sense that you’re watching a storyteller learn what his own genre actually costs.

Start with True Fiction, then continue with Killer Thriller and Fake Truth. Reading in order helps because the relationship between Ian and Margo evolves, and the series keeps building on the idea that Ian’s fiction is bleeding into his life, sometimes in ways he didn’t imagine.

If you like thrillers that are self-aware without turning into parody, this is a great place to start with Goldberg. You get the pace of an action novel, plus the comedy of a guy realizing he’s not as fearless as his dust-jacket bio makes him sound.
