Series background & context

The Eve Ronin series is modern police-procedural crime fiction set in Los Angeles County, where money, celebrity, and quiet neighborhoods can hide ugly violence. Eve Ronin is a young homicide detective who lands a high-profile promotion early, after an arrest video goes viral, which means she starts the series with a target on her back inside her own department.

In these books, Los Angeles County is a character.

Eve is smart and instinctive, but she’s also new to the politics of the job. Veteran cops assume she hasn’t earned her place, supervisors watch her for mistakes, and the press is happy to turn any misstep into a story. That internal pressure is part of the ongoing tension, right alongside the murders she’s investigating.

Her partner is Duncan Pavone, an experienced detective who’d planned to coast toward retirement, until he’s paired with Eve. Their relationship becomes one of the best parts of the books: he’s skeptical but fair, she’s driven and stubborn, and over time they turn into a real team. The cases test them in different ways, but the partnership is the thread that holds the series together.

The stories balance character work with clear, step-by-step investigations. You see interviews, evidence, false leads, and the slow grind of building a case that will actually stand up in court. At the same time, the books move quickly, and the settings keep the mysteries feeling current. Eve and Duncan work out of the Lost Hills station, covering places like Malibu, Calabasas, and the Santa Monica Mountains, areas that can look peaceful until you’re hunting a killer in the dark. Canyon roads, gated communities, and pockets of Hollywood influence all come with their own kind of secrecy.

Reading in order is the best experience, starting with Lost Hills and continuing through the later novels. Each book has its own case, but Eve’s reputation, her relationships inside the department, and the consequences of earlier decisions carry forward. The series also occasionally opens the lens to related investigators, especially when a case crosses into specialized territory like fire investigation or a multi-agency hunt.

If you want a procedural that feels modern, with sharp dialogue and a lead who’s constantly being tested from all sides, this series is an easy entry point into Lee Goldberg’s newer work. It’s grounded in police work, but it never forgets that the job is also personal, long after you finish it.
