The central figure in The Cursed is Luke Oliver, a private investigator whose job already puts him close to the supernatural edge. He is also far more powerful, and far more burdened, than he wants most people to know. When Rio Jones ends up tangled in a threat linked to his past, the book becomes both a romantic reunion and a wider magical crisis. The series uses their connection to open the door into a bigger world of curses, enemies, and old secrets.

Bordertown is where the series really finds its identity. This is not a polished fantasy city where everything runs on neat rules. It feels rougher, stranger, and more dangerous than that. Magic, demons, fae politics, and hidden power structures overlap with ordinary city life, and the result is a world where survival often depends on who you trust, what you know, and how quickly you can tell the difference between a bargain and a trap.

It is a moodier series.

The companion novella The Curse of the Black Swan shows another side of that mood. Brynn's family curse has old-world fairy-tale elements, but the emotional problem is familiar: what do you do when love itself might trigger disaster? That novella helps explain the series title and shows that the Black Swan world can hold both street-level magical conflict and older, more lyrical supernatural curses.

Compared with Day's cozier or more openly comic books, this series leans harder into tension, secrecy, and supernatural danger. The romance is still important, but so are the rules of the world, the weight of old magic, and the sense that every choice might carry a hidden cost. That makes the books feel a little sharper and more urban than her Atlantis or Dead End stories.

Even as a compact series, League of the Black Swan has a clear identity. Read it if you want Alyssa Day with more city grit, more magical secrecy, and a stronger urban fantasy flavor, while still keeping the romance front and center.
