Series background & context
Lawless and Lawless 2 tell one dark, tightly connected story, so this is best thought of as a duet rather than two separate standalones. The books live in Amarie Avant's Bratva world, but the focus stays very personal. This is the story of Anastasiya and Simeon, and it starts from a brutal premise.
Anastasiya has been treated like property for most of her life, a prize to be claimed when powerful men decide it is time. Simeon Resnov changes the script by taking her first. He is not safe, kind, or simple. What makes the series work is that he is both a captor and, in his own damaged way, the one person willing to burn down the old rules around her.
That tension drives everything. Anastasiya is trying to hold on to a self that other people have spent years crushing. Simeon is trying to love her from inside a world built on force, blood, and hierarchy. The romance is dark from the first page, and the books never pretend otherwise.
The second book opens the frame wider. Once Anastasiya stands beside Simeon, the threats do not stop. Power only brings new kinds of exposure. Betrayal, status, and Bratva politics all start pushing at the couple from different sides.
If you like protective antiheroes, heavy atmosphere, and romances where power is part of the problem, Lawless fits that lane. Just know what you are walking into. These books are intense, possessive, and much more interested in obsession than in polished fairy-tale comfort.
Read them in order. The second book is a continuation and conclusion, not a reset.
