Author bio

Lavinia Kent grew up between New York state and Wisconsin, two places that seem to fit the mix in her books, polished society on one side, stubborn independence on the other. She later studied at Wellesley College and earned an MBA from Georgetown University, then stayed in Washington, D.C., where she built both her writing life and her family life.

She has said that she used to assume everyone made up stories in their heads just to get through a grocery line or a waiting room.

Before writing full time, Kent worked in both the arts and the business world. She has also said she retired early from a job as a marketing director to become a mother and a writer, which helps explain why her books tend to care about practical details as much as fantasy. The turn toward fiction came after the birth of her oldest child, and it became a real career after her youngest arrived and childcare finally gave her the room to work.

She has also joked that technology helped. She never liked writing longhand, and she was not built for sitting still at a desk for hours, so the arrival of laptops made the whole thing more doable.

Her early historical romances, including A Talent for Sin, Bound By Temptation, Taken by Desire, and What a Duke Wants, are Regency stories with strong women at the center. Widows, heiresses, dukes, soldiers, and people with bad timing show up often. So do questions about money, freedom, reputation, and who gets to choose the shape of a life.

That interest in agency runs through her later work too.

In The Real Duchesses of London, she played with gossip, scandal sheets, and short, sharp romantic drama. In the Bound and Determined books, starting with Mastering the Marquess, she leaned into a more openly sensual Regency world built around secrecy, trust, and the tension between public respectability and private hunger. Much later, with contemporary novels like Unsuitable and Unmanageable, she kept the emotional temperature high but moved the conflicts into a modern setting, where status, ambition, and age gap scrutiny still have plenty of power.

Readers who click with her work usually like heroines who are not especially interested in behaving just because society says they should. Her heroes are often self possessed men who find themselves unsettled by exactly that kind of woman. Even when the setup is playful, as it is in Kathryn, The Kitten, or darker and more intimate, as it is in Ravishing Ruby, the books come back to the same thing: adults making messy choices and trying to build something honest out of them.

Outside the novels, Kent has been deeply involved in romance writing as a community. She served as a two term president of the Washington Romance Writers and was nominated four times for the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband, three children, cats, and what has been described as an ever changing small animal household. When she is not writing or reading, she has mentioned hiking near Rock Creek Park and watching more television than she probably means to. That mix of everyday life, sharp humor, and unapologetic love of romance feels very much like the books themselves.
