The Lavette Family series follows several interconnected immigrant families as they build lives, businesses, and complicated loyalties in California. It begins with The Immigrants, set in San Francisco in the early twentieth century, and continues across decades of American social and political change.

At the center is Daniel Lavette, the son of a fisherman who survives the 1906 earthquake and turns drive, nerve, and opportunity into a shipping fortune. His rise is only part of the story. Fast also follows Italian, Jewish, Irish, Chinese, and other families whose friendships, marriages, rivalries, and children bind the saga together.

San Francisco is more than scenery here. The city changes with the family, from its waterfront work and earthquake aftermath to its moneyed neighborhoods and expanding businesses. Ambition brings the Lavettes security, but it also creates new strains. Love affairs, class divisions, inheritance, public scandal, and old resentments never stay neatly in the past.
