Author bio
Laura Thalassa was born and raised in Fresno, California, and she spent a big part of childhood doing two things, reading and making up stories. She has said that books by Anne Rice, R.L. Stine, and Katie MacAlister helped spark her love of the strange, the romantic, and the supernatural. That blend still sits right at the center of her work.
Fantasy got to her early.
Before publishing novels, Thalassa took a winding path to the page. Past author bios mention time as a law student, an independent editor, a medical intern, and even an archaeologist. It is an unusual resume, and it helps explain why her books can jump so comfortably from old magic and immortal kings to practical details, danger, and people making very messy choices under pressure.
Her debut novel, The Unearthly, arrived in 2013. It introduced Gabrielle Fiori, the last of the sirens, and showed Thalassa's early taste for paranormal schools, dangerous love interests, and heroines who get thrown into impossible situations and keep moving anyway. Soon after, she expanded into science fiction with The Vanishing Girl, a story about teleportation, government control, and the cost of being different.
A lot of readers first meet her through Rhapsodic, the opening novel in The Bargainer series. Those books, centered on a siren and the fae king she owes far too many favors to, became some of her best-known work and helped build a big audience for her blend of fantasy and romance. Much of that readership grew while she was publishing independently, long before wider print editions brought the books to even more shelves.
She does not write small feelings.
Her range is wider than one series might suggest. The Queen of All that Dies leans into war, diplomacy, and an immortal conqueror. Pestilence turns apocalypse into a brutal road romance. Bewitched adds witches, missing memories, and an ancient curse. Across all of them, a few patterns keep returning: bargains with a price, power that leaves scars, women who are tougher than the people around them expect, and love stories that have to fight their way through fear, grief, or the end of the world.
The settings change, but the appeal stays pretty consistent. One book might take readers to a supernatural academy on the British Isles, another to fae courts, another to ruined highways and empty towns, another to a coven on the Northern California coast. Even when the worlds get bigger, Thalassa keeps the focus close to the characters. The magic matters, but so do the bad decisions, the stubborn loyalty, and the question of whether a monster can choose to be more than the worst thing it has done.
Recent author bios place her in Santa Barbara, California, with her husband, author Dan Rix. She has also kept a playful streak in her public bio, talking about guacamole, chocolate, and curling up with a good book when she is not writing. It fits. Her novels can get dark, but there is usually a wink somewhere in the voice, a reminder that she likes big feelings and wild premises, and knows exactly why readers do too.
