Things get worse fast. During a pre-initiation quest in the South American jungle, Selene accidentally awakens Memnon the Cursed, an ancient sorcerer who takes one look at her and believes she is his long-dead wife reborn. He is dangerous, obsessive, and tied to a past Selene cannot remember, which is a pretty effective way to ruin a school year before it starts.

Henbane gives the series a strong home base. The books mix coven life, training, rivalries, and witch politics with a darker mystery thread involving murdered witches, broken memories, forced bonds, and old magic pushing into the present. The world feels contemporary on the surface, but ancient underneath. The deeper Selene digs, the more the story starts to feel less like a simple academy romance and more like a curse laid across centuries.

The series also plays with time in a fun way. Bewitched and Bespelled push the present-day story forward, while The Curse that Binds turns back to ancient Rome and follows Roxilana, giving readers the roots of Memnon's obsession and the curse sitting over the whole series. Bedeviled raises the stakes again with marriage vows, demons, and a coven that is still far from safe. Together, the books build one long story rather than a set of standalones.

The magic always costs something.

If you like witchy romantasy with memory loss, reincarnation, hidden supernatural politics, and a love interest who is equal parts nightmare and devotion, this is the lane. The tone is dark, emotional, and a little feral in the best way, but the real hook is Selene herself. She is trying to solve murders, protect what is left of her mind, and figure out whether the man who might destroy her is also the man who knows her best. That gives the whole series a constant feeling of danger, even in its quiet scenes.
