Series background & context
Last Witch Standing is one of Deanna Chase's darker paranormal series. It shares DNA with her New Orleans worlds, especially Crescent City Fae, but the tone is more urgent and the danger feels closer to the surface. These books are less about cozy town magic and more about survival, loyalty, and what happens when supernatural politics turn violent.
The series centers on Phoebe Kilsen, a witch and vampire hunter who is used to handling herself. Phoebe is not drifting into magic for the first time. She is already in the fight when the books begin, which gives the series a more action-forward start. She has a partner, enemies, unfinished history, and a brother whose absence shapes a lot of what she does.
New Orleans matters here too, but in a different way from the Jade books. The city is a battleground full of shifting allegiances, dangerous creatures, and power struggles that do not leave much room for mistakes. Vampires, shifters, rogue magic, and black-market threats all crowd the story, so the books move quickly and hit harder.
This is a continuous arc series, not a string of separate romances. Phoebe's emotional life matters, especially where Dax and her missing brother are concerned, but the larger conflict keeps building from one book to the next. The spin-off connection to Crescent City Fae adds depth, though you can still follow Phoebe's story on its own.
Start with Soulless at Sunset and keep going in order. If you want Deanna Chase at her more dangerous and action-heavy, with a capable heroine and a city full of things that bite back, this is the series to try.
