Pushed out of her childhood home by her brother's growing family, Eva takes lodging and a job at a small cafe in a plant nursery. She is trying to build an independent life when Jake Miller, the first love she has never fully forgotten, returns to Lancaster County.

Eva and Jake's renewed connection is not simple. Questions about Jake's past, community expectations, and Eva's fear of being judged all stand in the way. The novel keeps its attention on the practical work of beginning again, finding a place to live, taking a new job, and learning whether someone can be trusted.
