Series background & context

Lake in the Clouds is Emily March’s foray into contemporary women’s fiction with strong romantic threads. Set around a lakeside town in Colorado, the series follows a multigenerational family and the people who orbit them as they rebuild lives shaken by loss, secrets, and big midlife changes.

The story begins in The Getaway, when widowed Genevieve Prentice decides that after decades of putting her children first, she is finally ready for something new. She sells the family home and heads for Lake in the Clouds to renovate a rustic waterfront lodge with her sister, Helen. Instead of quiet retirement, she finds a demanding project, a shock reunion with her adult son Jake, and a chance to redefine herself as more than a mother and a widow.

As the lodge takes shape, Lake in the Clouds becomes a crossroads for the whole clan. In Balancing Act, Genevieve is learning to enjoy her second chapter when her estranged eldest daughter, Willow, arrives with two young children and a heart full of unspoken grief. The novel explores their prickly, loving mother‑daughter dynamic, the slow work of forgiveness, and the unexpected hope that comes from new friendship and a wary, slow‑burn romance for both generations.

Second Chance Season widens the circle again through Zoey Hillcrest, a burned‑out bride‑to‑be who chooses the renovated inn as her destination wedding site. Faced with a faltering engagement, an ill mother she barely knows how to grieve, and questions about the life she is building, Zoey flees to the lake to catch her breath. A chance connection with Genevieve and Helen uncovers a family secret that ties all three women together in ways none of them expected.

Unlike the more overtly romantic Eternity Springs books, Lake in the Clouds spends as much time on mothers, sisters, and adult children as it does on couples. There are still love stories, of course, but they unfold alongside plotlines about caregiving, career burnout, aging, and the complicated loyalties that come with blended families.

The setting does a lot of quiet work. The inn, with its creaky floors, shared meals, and view of the water, acts as a physical reminder that spaces can be reclaimed and remade. Seasons change, weddings are planned, holidays arrive, and little by little the lake town becomes home for characters who once saw it only as a temporary escape.

Readers who like richly layered family stories, with emotional stakes that stretch beyond “will they or won’t they,” will find plenty to sink into here. Lake in the Clouds can be read independently of Eternity Springs, but it shares the same belief that community, honest conversation, and a beautiful landscape can help people take brave steps into the next phase of their lives.
