Jen Turano's first big series drops readers into Gilded Age New York, where drawing rooms are crowded, reputations are fragile, and one impulsive decision can ruin an otherwise polished evening. These books are historical romances, but they move with the bounce of a social comedy. There are matchmaking mothers, stubborn heroines, exasperated heroes, and just enough danger to keep the satin and sparkle from feeling too safe.

The series begins with the novella Gentleman of Her Dreams and then continues with A Change of Fortune, A Most Peculiar Circumstance, A Talent for Trouble, and A Match of Wits. Each book follows a different couple, but the cast overlaps so much that the stories feel like one lively social circle. Friends, siblings, and former suitors keep wandering back in, which gives the whole series a friendly, interconnected feel.

What makes these books work is the kind of woman Turano likes to write. Eliza arrives in New York disguised and determined to recover what was stolen from her. Arabella throws herself into the suffrage movement and resists every attempt to box her in. Felicia has to figure out who she is once her carefully planned future falls apart. Agatha is a reporter with a sharp tongue and a habit of charging straight toward trouble. None of them are content to sit quietly and wait for life to happen.

Nobody in this series gets to fall in love under calm, sensible circumstances.

The men are just as important to the tone. Hamilton Beckett is a widower businessman juggling society and family. Theodore Wilder is a private investigator who meets his match in Arabella. Grayson Sumner would like a peaceful life and never gets one. Zayne Beckett and Agatha spend so much time sparring that half the fun is watching them realize what everyone else already knows. The chemistry usually starts with irritation, disagreement, or a badly timed crisis, and only gets more appealing from there.

Setting matters here. Turano makes good use of Fifth Avenue parlors, train journeys, city streets, country houses, and all the odd corners where polite society bumps into real life. The rules of class, gender, and reputation are always present, but they are there to create pressure, not to weigh the books down. That is why the humor lands so well. A serious social world keeps getting interrupted by very inconvenient people.

If you like historical romance that mixes banter, faith, family, and a touch of mystery, this series is an easy place to start with Turano. The plots can get chaotic in the best way, but the emotional thread stays clear. Read them in order if you can, because the returning characters and running jokes are part of the charm.
