The Matchmakers takes one of Jen Turano's favorite ideas, the chaos of high society courtship, and makes it the whole engine of the series. These books move through the world of the New York Four Hundred and the Newport season, where introductions, sponsors, and marriage prospects all carry real weight. The twist is that the women at the center are often busy managing other people's matches while making a complete mess of their own.

The series runs through A Match in the Making, To Spark a Match, and Meeting Her Match. In the first book, Gwendolyn Brinley arrives expecting a pleasant summer and winds up serving as an assistant matchmaker while trying to find a wife for Walter Townsend. In the second, Adelaide Duveen, a reader, cat lover, and resigned spinster, stumbles into Gideon Abbott's covert work and is suddenly in over her head. By the third, Camilla Pierpont is a renowned matchmaker who has long since decided marriage is for other people, right up until danger and Owen Chesterfield start changing the equation.

This is a very social series.

That does not mean it is shallow. Turano uses the machinery of fashionable society, dinner parties, sponsorships, summer houses, and whispered judgments, to ask who gets seen clearly and who gets treated like a project. Matchmaking, in these books, is not just about pairing the right names on paper. It is about whether people are being judged by status, usefulness, grief, old mistakes, or the version of themselves they present to the room.

The romance comes with a good amount of external trouble. Walter has children and practical concerns that make his search for a wife more than a game. Gideon is tangled up in criminal danger. Camilla's story begins with an abduction attempt and widens from there. So while the series sparkles with comedy, it also keeps its couples moving through genuine stakes. The tension is not just whether they will admit their feelings, but whether they can stop arranging life into neat little plans and actually trust what is right in front of them.

The settings help a lot. Newport gives the first book a lovely seasonal bustle. The second plays with drawing-room polish set against secret investigations. The third expands outward and lets a more formal New York woman run into the blunt charm of a West Virginia town. That shift keeps the series from feeling stuck in one ballroom.

If you enjoy historical romance with matchmaking plots, society pressure, and heroines who are smarter than the system surrounding them, this series is easy to sink into. It is best read in order, because the social network carries forward and the later books feel richer when you already know the players. Still, each romance has its own center, and each one finds a fresh way to turn elegant plans into delightful disorder.
