Series background & context

The Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister is written as a set of first-person journals, which makes the history feel close and immediate. The story begins in gold-rush California in 1852, when booming camps and rough towns are springing up faster than anyone can build rules to match.

Corrie Belle Hollister is fifteen, and she’s suddenly forced into a grown-up role. With four younger siblings depending on her, Corrie has to make decisions about where to go, who to trust, and how to keep the family together when the world around them is unpredictable.

Corrie’s voice is the hook.

Across the books, the setting does a lot of work. The gold fields promise quick fortune, but they also attract scams, violence, and people who don’t mind taking from kids who can’t fight back. That tension keeps the pages turning, even when the moments are small, like sharing a meal, finding a safe place to sleep, or learning which adults are truly safe.

It’s equal parts survival story and family story.

The series keeps faith in view without turning the journals into sermons. Corrie is figuring things out as she goes, wrestling with fear, anger, and hope, and learning that courage isn’t the same thing as never being scared. By the later volumes, the question isn’t just whether the Hollisters can endure, it’s whether they can find something that looks like home.

If you want to read in order, start with My Father's World and follow Corrie’s journals from there. Each book has its own immediate problem, but the larger arc is about belonging, growing up too fast, and choosing what kind of person you’ll be when nobody is watching.
