Series background & context
The Kiki Lowenstein mysteries are contemporary cozies set in and around St. Louis. Kiki begins the series as a scrapbook-loving wife and mother whose life is shattered when her husband is murdered. Suddenly she has a daughter to protect, bills to manage, and painful questions about a marriage that was not what she thought.
That is where Paper, Scissors, Death starts.
Kiki does not become an amateur detective because she is looking for danger. She gets involved because the people around her are in trouble, because she hates being treated as helpless, and because she is good at seeing the stories hidden in photographs, paper trails, old memories, and everyday conversations. Her work in scrapbooking and papercrafts gives the series a warm, practical texture.
St. Louis is more than a backdrop. Kiki's world includes craft stores, schools, neighborhood events, family gatherings, businesses, and community institutions. The city gives her a large circle of friends, clients, neighbors, relatives, and occasional enemies. It also means that a case can begin with a small personal conflict and open into something much larger.
The series is about rebuilding a life.
Kiki changes as the books go on. She learns to support herself, make difficult choices for her daughter Anya, handle romantic complications, and trust her own instincts. The mysteries still provide the engine of each book, but readers also follow the longer story of a woman moving from shock and grief toward a fuller, more independent life.
The tone is cozy but not weightless. Slan brings in family secrets, financial strain, workplace pressure, grief, faith, friendship, and the complications of second chances. Kiki's friends are often funny, occasionally exasperating, and essential when a case threatens to overwhelm her.
Begin with Paper, Scissors, Death, then read forward through Cut, Crop & Die and Ink, Red, Dead. The novels usually solve their central crimes, but Kiki's relationships and personal growth make publication order the best way to read.
