Author bio
Neil Plakcy was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and raised in Yardley, Pennsylvania. A lot of his fiction still carries that mix of place, memory, and movement, whether he is writing about Bucks County, South Beach, Honolulu, Victorian London, or a quiet Brooklyn cafe.
He started wanting to be a writer at sixteen.
The spark, by his own account, came from a high school English assignment that asked students to rewrite A Separate Peace from another character's point of view. That exercise taught him something basic and lasting about voice, emotion, and the way a story can change when you shift perspective. He kept writing after that, took creative writing classes at the University of Pennsylvania, and stayed with it even when publication did not come quickly.
For a while, writing had to share space with a more practical life. Plakcy earned an MBA from Columbia, worked in business, and eventually moved into the computer world, first because he wanted a word processor and then because the work itself pulled him in. He later spent time in South Florida working for a computer game company, an experience that would feed directly into some of his later fiction.
Then writing moved back to the center. He earned an MFA in creative writing from Florida International University in 1992, in the program's first graduating class, and his thesis became the comic novel Invasion of the Blatnicks. His first published fiction was an erotic short story, and his first published novel was Mahu, the book that introduced Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa'aka.
That first mystery set a pattern. Plakcy likes genre fiction with a strong sense of place and people who are trying to make sense of themselves while solving problems that will not wait. In the Mahu books, readers get police work, Hawaii, family, surf culture, and questions of identity. In the Golden Retriever Mysteries, beginning with In Dog We Trust, he shifts into a warmer, cozier register, pairing reformed hacker Steve Levitan with an unusually clue-conscious dog named Rochester.
He has never stayed in one lane for long.
His romance novels range from the South Beach comedy and longing of GayLife.com to the globe-trotting suspense of the Have Body, Will Guard books, to the Victorian tenderness and intrigue of The Gentleman and the Spy. More recently, the Smiling Dog Cafe stories show another side of his work, quieter, gentler, and more interested in grief, recovery, and everyday connection.
Across all those books, certain things keep showing up. Dogs matter. Found family matters. So do queer lives, second chances, and the tension between public identity and private truth. Even when the plots involve murder, espionage, or disaster, the emotional engine is usually personal: who can be trusted, who belongs where, and how people rebuild after loss.
He also worked as a journalist, reviewer, and longtime professor of English at Broward College. Along the way he served in leadership roles with mystery-writing organizations, taught writing craft, and kept building a body of work that moves easily between mystery, romance, erotica, and nonfiction.
Now based in Hollywood, Florida, he lives with his husband and their golden retrievers. That detail feels right for a writer whose books, even the dark ones, usually make room for loyalty, companionship, and the odd nudge toward home.
