Author bio
Kiersten Modglin writes twisty psychological thrillers about ordinary people pushed into extraordinary danger, from crumbling marriages and creepy houses to small towns with very dark histories. Her books are known for fast pacing, sharp hooks, and endings that refuse to sit quietly.
She grew up in rural western Kentucky, the kid who was always scribbling stories in notebooks and begging for more pens and paper instead of toys. By the time she hit middle school and high school, she was printing out full-length novels on her family’s printer, sliding thick binders to classmates and teachers who lined up to read whatever she finished next.
After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart and took a job in the financial industry while she tried to figure out how to turn that lifelong writing habit into a career. For a while, her days were spreadsheets and customers, and her nights were rough drafts and revisions, usually on just a few hours of sleep.
Her first three novels, including If It Walks Like a Killer, came out with a small publisher in 2016. When those early books did not take off the way she hoped, she pivoted, learning the nuts and bolts of independent publishing so she could keep full control of her stories, covers, and schedule. That meant teaching herself design, formatting, and marketing on a shoestring budget while still working full time and raising a new baby.
For several years, she wrote in every spare pocket of time she could find, often staying up past midnight and waking before dawn. Along the way she picked up a crucial piece of advice from other indie writers, that nothing sells your last book like your next one. Instead of waiting for a single breakout, she focused on writing consistently, releasing multiple books a year and trusting that readers would follow the twists from one story into the next.
The persistence paid off. Modglin went full time as an author in 2020, and her catalogue has grown to dozens of titles that have sold more than two million copies and been translated into multiple languages. She is a member of International Thriller Writers, Novelists, Inc., and the Alliance of Independent Authors, a KDP Select All-Star, and a recipient of several genre awards, including honors from ThrillerFix, Suspense Magazine, and the Silver Falchion Awards.
Readers often discover her through a single viral favorite, then race through the backlist. Domestic shockers like The Arrangement trilogy sit alongside island and cabin thrillers such as The Missing, The Perfect Getaway, and The Last Trip, small-town mysteries like The Reunion, and meta stories about writers and books, including Do Not Open and You’ll Never Know I’m Here. Across them all, she leans hard into uneasy relationships, shifting alliances, and that moment when you realize someone you love might be lying to you.
Her process is intense and immersive. When she is drafting, she lives inside the story world, following her characters into darker corners than she expected and constantly asking what choice would scare her the most if she were in their shoes. A long-standing fascination with psychology shows up on the page in the form of unreliable narrators, buried trauma, and ordinary people pushed to do things they never thought themselves capable of.
Today, Modglin lives in the Nashville area with her husband and daughter. When she is not writing, she is likely binge-watching television, re-reading favorite suspense novels, or enjoying a rainy day inside with her family. Her dedicated fan community, the self-named KMod Squad, follows along as each new twisty story joins the shelf, knowing there is always another jaw-dropping ending on the way.
