Author bio

Kerrigan Byrne was born in Utah and spent much of her childhood moving around the American West. In one interview, she said she had lived in every western state except Oregon and attended thirteen schools before high school, when her mother moved the family back to the Salt Lake area.

That restlessness shows up in her books.

Before writing became her full-time work, Byrne did a little of everything. She has said she worked jobs as different as law enforcement and belly dance instruction, all while holding onto a much older plan. At thirteen, she announced to a skeptical family that she was going to grow up to be a romance novelist, and eventually she did exactly that.

Her fiction moves across historical romance, mystery, paranormal romance, and romantic suspense, but the threads are easy to spot. She loves history, leans into her Celtic ancestry, and brings a real fondness for Shakespeare, folklore, and dangerous settings. Even when the genre shifts, her stories tend to pair damaged, intense men with women who are smarter, tougher, and harder to scare than anyone expects.

A lot of readers start with The Highwayman, the book that introduced her Victorian Rebels world and helped make her name in historical romance. Books like The Hunter, The Highlander, and The Duke followed with scarred heroes, stubborn heroines, and enough danger around the edges to keep the romance from ever feeling too tidy. Byrne likes people with rough histories and sharp chemistry, and she rarely writes a love story that floats free of the larger plot.

She can go darker when she wants to. How to Love a Duke in Ten Days opens the Devil You Know series with late Victorian glamour, old wounds, and a romance that is as much about healing as desire. Then The Business of Blood shows another side of her range entirely, following Fiona Mahoney, a woman who cleans crime scenes in 1890 London while hunting answers linked to Jack the Ripper.

Range is part of the appeal.

She also writes stories with a strong sense of place. Sometimes that means foggy London streets, Highland keeps, and old grudges that feel older than the buildings. Sometimes it means cursed clans, banshees, berserkers, and druids in the Highland Magic books. And sometimes it means something much lighter, like the quirky seaside charm of Nevermore Bookstore and the Townsend Harbor novels.

These days Byrne lives on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington with her husband, two Rottweiler mixes, and a very cuddly cat. When she is not writing or researching, she has said she likes being on the water, kayaking, going to the beach, eating, drinking, shopping, and catching live comedy, ballet, or a movie. It fits the books somehow, a little history, a little drama, and no interest in being boring.
