Series background & context
Highland Magic is Kerrigan Byrne at her most myth-soaked. These stories take place in a version of medieval Scotland where clan wars, blood feuds, and arranged marriages are real enough, but so are berserkers, banshees, druids, curses, prophecies, and old gods who do not stay politely in the background.
The series starts with the MacLauchlan berserkers in books like Highland Secret, Highland Shadow, and Highland Stranger. These heroes are brutal fighters with a cursed bloodline and very little faith that love will save them. Byrne pairs them with women who are not passive prizes. Her heroines bring secrets, second sight, grit, and a willingness to fight back.
Then the books turn darker with the MacKay stories, including Highland Darkness, Highland Devil, and Highland Destiny. Here the mood gets more haunted. Vengeance matters. So does unfinished business from beyond the grave. The heroines are banshees, the heroes are lairds or druids carrying their own damage, and romance keeps getting tangled up with revenge.
By the time the de Moray druids arrive in Highland Warlord, Highland Witch, and Highland Warrior, the world has widened. These stories lean harder into relics, ancient magic, and stakes that creep toward apocalypse. Even so, Byrne never forgets the personal side of things. The big battles work because the couples feel cornered in intimate ways too.
This is not cozy fantasy.
Expect fast novellas, fated-mate energy, blunt desire, and a lot of emotional intensity packed into a small space. If you like Highland romance but want more supernatural danger, this series is a very easy rabbit hole to fall into.
