Author bio
Kentaro Miura was born on July 11, 1966, in Chiba, Japan, and spent part of his childhood in Yachiyodai before moving around as he grew up. In later interviews, he talked about drawing from a very early age, and by elementary school he was already making manga for classmates instead of just doodling in the margins.
He started young, and he never really stopped.
One of those childhood projects was Miuranger, a homemade manga he created when he was only ten. As a teenager he kept pushing his art further, eventually entering Nihon University's art program with the one-shot Futatabi. In 1988 he published Berserk Prototype, a short work that introduced the bones of the world he would spend the rest of his life building.
The next big shift was turning professional. Miura collaborated with writer Buronson on projects like King of Wolves and Japan, but once Berserk began serialization in 1989, it quickly became the center of his creative life. What started as a dark fantasy revenge story kept widening into something stranger, sadder, funnier, and more human.
Guts was never just a guy with a big sword.
Readers came for the violence, the monsters, and the sheer force of the artwork, but they stayed for the broken friendships and stubborn loyalty underneath it all. The Golden Age storyline, with Guts, Griffith, and Casca at its center, turned Berserk into one of manga's defining long-form epics. Miura also supervised the 1997 anime adaptation, and in 2002 he received an Award for Excellence at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Berserk.
Though Berserk was the work that made his name, it was not the only thing he did. He drew King of Wolves and Japan from Buronson scripts, later released the standalone Giganto Maxia, and launched Duranki late in his career. Even in those smaller projects, readers could see the same interests showing up again and again: dense world-building, forceful action, odd humor, and characters trying to hold on to themselves in brutal worlds.
In interviews, Miura often came across less like a grand public figure and more like someone who simply cared a lot about the work. He spoke about reading widely, borrowing from Western fantasy and film, and finding story through drawing as much as through plotting. That helps explain why his pages can feel so packed with motion, texture, mud, stone, armor, and weather.
Miura died on May 6, 2021, from acute aortic dissection, at the age of 54. The loss hit readers hard, not only because Berserk was unfinished, but because it had been part of their lives for decades.
His work did not vanish with him. Berserk Volume 41 collected the last chapters he completed, and the manga later resumed under Studio Gaga, the team of assistants who had long worked with him, with supervision from his close friend Kouji Mori. But Miura's real legacy is still on the page: impossible detail, bruised hearts, and the stubborn idea that struggling on still matters.
