Berserk: The Flame Dragon Knight Books in Order

Berserk: The Flame Dragon Knight is a side novel set inside the Berserk world, centered on Grunbeld, the enormous warhammer-wielding apostle who later clashes with Guts in the manga. Instead of following Guts, this book works backward. It asks who Grunbeld was before he became a monster, what kind of country shaped him, and how a feared warrior's legend gets built long before the supernatural part fully takes over.

It is not a replacement for the main manga.

The story is set in Grant, a hard northern duchy on a volcanic island, where invasion threats and old legends are part of everyday life. Grunbeld grows up in that pressure cooker after losing his father and suffering through war very young. He is already big, stubborn, and built for battle, but the book spends time on the people around him too, especially Benedikte, the blind girl who sees something dragon-like in him long before anyone else does.

As Grunbeld gets older, the novel shifts into military and court drama. He rises through Grant's ranks, builds his name as the commander of the Flame Dragon Knights, and gets pulled into the fear, pride, and ambition of a country trying to survive. Friends, rivals, and noble power games matter here. So do the hints that something darker has been waiting near him all along.

The beherit is never just decoration.

In tone, this is still very much Berserk: grim war, cruel choices, bad rulers, and the sense that human violence already makes the world monstrous before literal demons arrive. But because the main character is Grunbeld, the story feels a little different from Guts's journey. It is more about how a fighter becomes a symbol, how loyalty bends under pressure, and how fate can look almost heroic right up until it turns.

The novel was conceived by Kentaro Miura and written by Makoto Fukami, with illustrations by Miura. It works best once you already know who Grunbeld is in the main series, because the pull comes from seeing a future enemy as a full person. If you want more Berserk world-building, battlefield tension, and a darker side road through the mythology, this is the spin-off to try.
