The Keeper of Crows books are darker and stranger than a lot of Casey L Bond's other fantasy work. Instead of starting with a princess, a prophecy, or a kingdom at war, this series begins with Carmen Kennedy, a wealthy, self-destructive young woman whose life is already unraveling before anything supernatural shows up. She is angry, numb, and used to trying to outrun her pain in the worst possible ways.

Then the story pulls her somewhere far worse than Beverly Hills.

In Keeper of Crows, Carmen is dragged into a bleak realm that sits between life and death, a place shaped by purgatory imagery, dangerous beings, and constant uncertainty. The titular Keeper is not just a love interest. He is part guardian, part warrior, part mystery, and his job is tied to keeping order in a place that feels only one step removed from collapse. That gives the romance a very different flavor from Bond's lighter fantasy couples. It is intense, uneasy, and tangled up with questions about whether Carmen is even seeing the truth clearly.
