Author bio
Kathryn Nolan is a queer romance author from the Philadelphia area who uses they/them pronouns, and place matters in their work. Their books bounce from South Philly blocks to Big Sur cliffs, from rare-book vaults to radio stations and beach towns, but the throughline is familiar: strong chemistry, openhearted emotion, and people trying to build lives that feel honest.
Writing came first. Nolan has said they were the kid who was always making up stories, and in sixth grade they even wrote a soap-opera-style novel called All My Students. They studied creative writing in college, but for a while the writing dream slipped to the side as they moved into political science and social justice work.
Then they found their way back.
Before publishing, Nolan spent a couple of years doing NaNoWriMo, taking writing classes, and joining writing groups. They published their first novella in 2016, and the pace picked up fast. In 2017, Nolan and their husband quit their jobs, moved into a camper van, and spent months traveling around the U.S. and Canada. A move to Sacramento also changed their life in a more personal way, because that is where they met their husband, Rob. Later, they ended up back in Philadelphia, the city they still call home.
That mix of motion and homecoming shows up all over the books.
Readers who start with Bohemian or Landslide usually meet the side of Nolan that loves beautiful settings and opposites who should not work, but do. Both Big Sur romances lean into wild coastline, cramped proximity, and people learning to say what they actually want. Strictly Professional and Not the Marrying Kind bring a different energy, punk, family chaos, business pressure, and a lot of sparks. Then On the Ropes slows things down just enough to give South Philly a tender, funny, lived-in love story.
The Codex books, Behind the Veil, Under the Rose, and In the Clear, show another big part of Nolan's range. Those novels blend romance with rare-book theft, private investigators, secret societies, and a steady sense of danger. They are suspenseful, yes, but still very much romance novels, with the emotional push and pull always front and center.
Nolan also likes writing people who are a little prickly, a little lost, and very worth rooting for. Wild Open Hearts pairs a scandal-hit billionaire beauty founder with a dog-rescuing ex-biker. Rival Radio turns clashing on-air hosts into a smart, sexy workplace romance. More recently, Free Fall and Thrill of the Chase lean further into queer love stories, action, and adventure, while keeping the same warmth, humor, and heat that run through the earlier books.
Off the page, Nolan describes themselves as a bisexual bookworm with big Leo energy and an amateur photographer. They live in Philadelphia with their husband Rob and their rescue dog Walter, and they love hiking, camping, traveling, and road-tripping. That outdoor streak, along with the love of books, community, and chosen family, keeps showing up in the fiction too. Even when the setup is flashy or high-concept, a Kathryn Nolan romance usually comes back to something simple: two people learning how to be brave with each other.
