Author bio
Kathleen Fuller was born in New Orleans and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. Before she wrote novels full time, she trained as a teacher, earning degrees in early childhood and elementary education as well as special education, with an emphasis on teaching blind and visually impaired students. That practical background still feels close to her fiction. She notices how people work, how families talk past each other, and how small daily choices shape a life.
Writing came later.
On her own site, Fuller says she started writing on January 1, 2000, which is a tidy beginning for a long career. She published a short story the following year, then her first novella, Encore, Encore, before moving into full-length fiction with Santa Fe Sunrise. Those early books gave her room to work in contemporary and historical romance before her focus shifted toward the Amish fiction many readers know her for now.
That shift changed everything.
Her breakout period came when Thomas Nelson began publishing her Amish stories. Books like A Man of His Word, Treasuring Emma, and A Reluctant Bride helped establish the communities of Middlefield and Birch Creek as recurring places readers could return to. Later novels such as Written in Love and Words from the Heart showed another one of her strengths, letter driven romances that feel gentle on the surface but carry real emotional weight underneath.
She has also written beyond those Amish settings. The Maple Falls romances, including Hooked on You and Much Ado About a Latte, move into contemporary small-town Arkansas and lean more openly comic, while still keeping the warmth, second chances, and community ties that run through so much of her work. More recent books like So into You and Behind Enemy Bylines show the same interest in people who feel a little awkward, a little guarded, or a little out of place, then slowly find their footing.
Her books have sold more than two million copies, and Written in Love won Romantic Times Inspirational Romance of the Year in 2018. Several of her novels have also landed on Christian bestseller lists. Those are big milestones, but the appeal of her fiction is usually simpler than that. Readers come for believable emotional conflict, faith that matters to the characters, and endings that feel earned instead of rushed.
Fuller returns again and again to certain themes. She likes stories about forgiveness, homecoming, family strain, and the quiet risk of trusting someone after disappointment. She also writes especially well about women and men who do not fit neatly into what their community expects, whether that means a shy reader, a returning outsider, a practical caretaker, or someone still figuring out where they belong.
Now based in central Arkansas, Fuller describes herself as a retired special education teacher. She lives with her husband, James, and they have four adult children. When she is not writing, she reads, crochets, travels, and watches classic movies, which somehow feels exactly right for an author whose stories are so often about comfort, patience, and starting over.
