Author bio
Amy Clipston grew up in New Jersey and has been making up stories for as long as she can remember. She likes to say her writing life started in elementary school, when she and a close friend wrote silly stories just for fun.
For a long time, that was all writing was, fun. Even after her family moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and even after she earned a communications degree from Virginia Wesleyan University in Norfolk, she did not expect to become a novelist.
Life went in a more ordinary direction first. A summer job with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk turned into an eleven-year career, and she worked as a writer and editor while building a life with her husband, Joe.
She kept writing anyway.
At first it stayed private, something she did to unwind after work and hardly talked about outside a small circle of friends. Then she found Chesapeake Romance Writers, a local fiction group that showed her writing could be more than a hobby. There she learned how to plot a novel, revise it, and look for an agent.
That changed everything. She sold her first book in 2007, and A Gift of Grace introduced readers to the Kauffman Amish Bakery world, a series built around family strain, faith, and the clash between Amish and English lives. From there she kept returning to Lancaster County in books like The Forgotten Recipe, The Bake Shop, and Foundation of Love, usually with a mix of romance, grief, second chances, and close community ties.
Her books tend to stay rooted in family. Even when the setup is romantic, she often writes about sisters, parents, widowers, children, and the everyday pressure of caring for other people. She has said she was fascinated by the Amish as a child, and an Amish friend in Lancaster County helps with her research, which gives her long-running Amish series a steady, lived-in feel.
She has also branched out beyond Amish fiction. Her young adult novels, including Roadside Assistance, lean contemporary, while later romances such as The Heart of Splendid Lake, The View from Coral Cove, and Finding You move into North Carolina settings and small-town love stories. Even there, the emotional center stays familiar, people trying to rebuild, forgive, and make a home.
One of her most personal books is The Gift of Love, a memoir about kidney donation. In 2011, she donated a kidney as part of a paired exchange that helped her husband receive a second transplant, and she later wrote about the experience with the same directness and heart she brings to her fiction.
Today she lives in North Carolina with her husband, two sons, her mother, and a lively group of spoiled cats, and she still works full-time outside publishing. That mix, ordinary life, steady work, and a lot of feeling on the page, helps explain why her books feel approachable. They come from someone who kept writing until the hobby finally turned into the life she wanted.
