Series background & context
The Katherine "Kitty" Katt books start with one of Gini Koch's favorite kinds of moves, taking an ordinary day and blowing it up completely. In Touched by an Alien, marketing manager Katherine Katt steps into what looks like a bad street fight, learns that aliens are real, and finds out the good-looking people rushing around in Armani are from Alpha Centauri. They are on Earth for a reason, and that reason is very bad news for everyone.
Kitty is the chaos magnet.
That first book gives the series its core setup. Kitty gets pulled into Centaurion Division, the secret group working with the Alpha Centaurions to protect Earth from superbeings, conspirators, and all the other things normal people are not supposed to know about. Jeff Martini is the key romantic lead, but he is also part of the larger machine Kitty has to learn to survive inside. The books are full of agents, scientists, family members, political operatives, alien factions, and assorted wild cards. The cast gets big fast, but the emotional center stays with Kitty and the way she reacts to whatever fresh disaster shows up next.
What makes the series work is that it never stays small for long. Early books such as Alien Tango and Alien in the Family are packed with action scenes, secret missions, strange creatures, and lots of relationship turbulence, but the story keeps widening. Before long, the books are also about diplomacy, public image, marriage, parenting, world leadership, and what happens when a woman who was once just trying to get through the day ends up with half a galaxy looking at her for answers.
The scale gets huge.
Even so, these novels are not grim space opera. They are funny, fast, and very chatty in the best way. Kitty is practical, pop-culture fluent, stubborn, and nearly impossible to intimidate for long. Gini Koch uses that voice to keep the books moving, even when the plot turns toward conspiracies, assassination attempts, interstellar politics, and universe-level trouble. Later entries like Alien Diplomacy, Alien in Chief, and Aliens Abroad push the series well beyond secret-agent missions, but the same core promise stays in place: Kitty will be dropped into a mess no one sane wants, and she will somehow keep going.
There is also a strong found-family element running through the whole series. Kitty and Jeff's relationship matters, but so do the friendships, loyalties, rivalries, and increasingly tangled family ties around them. As the books go on, Earth politics and alien politics become harder to separate, which gives the series a nice mix of domestic comedy and very high stakes.
So if you are wondering what kind of ride this is, think action-heavy science fiction romance with government conspiracies, a huge recurring cast, and a heroine who would rather charge into danger than wait politely for a briefing. Start at the beginning. These books build on each other, and half the fun is watching Kitty's world get bigger, stranger, and louder one book at a time.
