Author bio

Gini Koch was born in California, built much of her career in the American Southwest, and spent more than twenty-five years working in marketing and advertising before fiction took over. She worked first in Los Angeles and later inside a Fortune 50 company, which helps explain why her books often sound like they know both corporate chaos and office politics from the inside.

Writing started as something she did on the side, then kept getting bigger. What began as a creative outlet turned into a full-time career, and Koch ended up doing what many genre writers hope for, building not just one fictional lane, but several.

She does not stay in one lane.

Most readers meet her through Touched by an Alien, the opening novel in her long-running Katherine "Kitty" Katt series. That book, which was named one of Booklist's Top 10 adult science fiction and fantasy novels of 2010, sets the tone for a lot of what Koch does best: fast action, secret conspiracies, romance, big ensemble casts, and jokes that land in the middle of danger. Alien Tango and Alien in the Family quickly widen the scope, turning a monster-fighting setup into a much bigger story about diplomacy, family, and saving the world on very little sleep.

She has also used pen names to stretch into other parts of genre fiction. As G.J. Koch she wrote Alexander Outland: Space Pirate, a pulpy space opera about a charming rogue and his misfit crew. As A.E. Stanton she wrote the dark New West stories, and as Anita Ensal she published work like A Cup of Joe. She has also written paranormal fiction such as The Night Beat, a modern Holmes riff in A Study in Starlets, and a contemporary romance, Plush Life.

That range is part of the point.

Across those books, some patterns keep showing up. Koch likes fast plots, found-family teams, hidden worlds, and people who discover they are tougher than they thought. She is drawn to secret agencies, strange creatures, political messes, and characters who talk back when common sense says they should run. Even when the setup gets wild, killer aliens, werewolf cops, space pirates, the tone stays welcoming and easy to read.

She is also a visible pop-culture fan. Koch has written about movies and television, talks often about comics and animation, and has spent years appearing at conventions around the United States. That energy runs straight into the fiction. Her novels often feel like they were built by someone who genuinely enjoys genre storytelling and wants readers to have fun with it too.

These days she writes from the Atlanta area, though she still talks fondly about dry heat. She has described herself as inspired by good-looking leading men, helped along by a patient husband, and supervised by a household full of dogs and cats who seem to expect regular tribute in kibble and treats. It fits the books. There is always a lot going on, the pace is quick, and nobody gets to be too solemn for too long.
