Kate Marshall writes across middle grade, young adult, and adult suspense, building stories out of hidden roads, bad weather, old houses, and the feeling that something is not quite right. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest and now lives outside Seattle, so it is no surprise that woods, rain, and isolated places keep turning up in her fiction.

She started telling stories before she could properly write them down.

Marshall has said her mother used to take dictation for those early tales, and by four or five she had already decided she wanted to write books. She kept at it as a teenager, drafting fiction and sending work out, and that long apprenticeship shows in how controlled even her wildest plots feel. The books move fast, but they are built with care.

You can see her range in the books she writes for younger readers. Thirteens, Brackenbeast, and Glassheart turn a tidy town called Eden Eld into the site of a creepy old bargain, strange creatures, and fairytale logic gone bad. Extra Normal takes a lighter route, following the only ordinary kid in a family full of supernatural talents. Even when the stories get scary, there is usually humor, warmth, or stubborn hope mixed in with the chills.

Her young adult novels tend to hit harder. I Am Still Alive strands an injured girl in the Canadian wilderness and turns survival into something fierce and personal. Rules for Vanishing uses a ghost road and a faux documentary style to tell a story about grief, fear, and the price of going looking for the lost. Our Last Echoes, These Fleeting Shadows, and The Narrow all lean into haunted places, family secrets, and teenagers forced to question what the adults around them have hidden.

She likes a setting that feels alive, and maybe a little hostile.

That instinct carried neatly into her adult work. Marshall made her adult thriller debut with What Lies in the Woods, a story about three former child heroes, a buried lie, and the danger of old stories hardening into accepted truth. She followed it with No One Can Know, about three sisters pulled back to the house where their parents were murdered, and A Killing Cold, which strands a young woman with her fiance's wealthy family at an isolated winter retreat. The Girls Before keeps digging into missing girls, local legend, and the damage communities can ignore when the right people stay comfortable. Those adult thrillers helped make her a USA Today bestselling author.

Across all of these books, the same interests keep surfacing. Marshall writes a lot about girls and women under pressure, families with sharp edges, friendships tested by fear, and communities that would rather bury the past than face it. Readers often come for the momentum and the scares, but stay for the atmosphere and the emotional mess. Her protagonists are rarely polished heroes. They are hurt, stubborn, clever, frightened, and still moving.

Off the page, the life sounds calmer. She lives outside Seattle with her family, two very friendly golden retrievers, and a growing collection of fancy pens, and when summer comes she likes to kayak and camp along Puget Sound.
