DL Marshall Books in Order

DL Marshall was born and raised in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The place matters to his work. He has pointed to its dark industrial buildings, steep wooded valleys, and the Pennine moors as lasting influences on the thrillers he writes.

His stories tend to put people in places where geography is more than scenery. An island can become a trap. A mountain road can cut off escape. A ship crossing rough water can turn every corridor into a danger zone.

Marshall's route into publishing came into focus at Bloody Scotland in 2016, where he pitched his work. In 2018, he won a Northern Writers' Award for the novel that became Anthrax Island. The book arrived in 2021 as the first John Tyler thriller, introducing a tough, capable man who is called in when an ordinary solution won't do.

In Anthrax Island, Tyler is sent to a government-controlled Scottish island with a poisonous wartime history. A group of scientists is stranded when equipment fails, and a death inside a sealed room makes a bad situation much worse. The setup gives Marshall room for action, suspicion, and a classic impossible-crime puzzle, all while the contaminated landscape keeps the pressure on.

That mix carries into Black Run. Tyler's job begins with an abduction at a ski resort in the Alps, then shifts to a battered freighter making for Britain. When the captive is found dead in a sealed hold, the extraction turns into a murder investigation, with the sea, the weather, and the people on board all closing in. Readers who like fast missions but also want a mystery to solve will find both strands working together here.

The trilogy concludes with 77 North, which sends Tyler to a Soviet-era hotel on an ice-locked island in Siberia. He is drawn back into the field for a mission involving a Russian scientist and a suspected double agent, but strange deaths and Tyler's own past complicate everything. The novel was longlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger in 2024.

Across the John Tyler books, the locations change from the Scottish coast to the Alps, the Atlantic, and Siberia, but the basic tension stays sharp.
