Author bio

Kass Morgan is the pen name of Mallory Kass, a New York City-born author and editor whose books put young people in tight corners: a hostile planet, a military academy, or a sorority house with a dangerous secret. She writes largely for teen readers, mixing high-concept settings with friendship, romance, divided loyalties, and difficult choices.

Her academic path ran through Brown University, where she studied English and history, then Oxford, where she earned a master's degree in nineteenth-century literature. That mix of older literature and speculative fiction still makes sense beside the varied worlds she builds.

Before publishing novels, Morgan worked as an editor. When she wanted to move from helping shape other writers' books to writing fiction herself, a fellow editor encouraged her to contact Alloy Entertainment. She auditioned for one project and did not get it.

Soon afterward, she was invited to try a new idea built around teenagers sent from a space colony to a ravaged Earth. That idea became The 100, the first in a series that continued with Day 21, Homecoming, and Rebellion. The books follow Clarke, Bellamy, Wells, Glass, and other young colonists as survival, old secrets, and the rules of a new society collide.

The books also led to a television adaptation, but Morgan wrote the novel while the pilot was being developed, and the two versions soon took different paths. That gap matters for newcomers: the books use their own characters, relationships, and plot turns rather than serving as scripts in prose.

She likes an ensemble, because a crisis looks different from each seat in the room.

With Light Years and Supernova, Morgan moved to the Quatra Fleet Academy, where four cadets from very different planets are forced to work together as war approaches. The series keeps the space action close to the characters: ambition, class divisions, secret identities, first love, and the uneasy business of learning whom to trust.

Morgan later teamed up with Danielle Paige for The Ravens and The Monarchs, a contemporary fantasy about a college sorority that is also a coven. Those books trade spaceships for Savannah, Georgia, and bring campus rivalries, friendship, tarot-linked magic, and a growing supernatural threat into the mix.

In Royal Summer, she takes a lighter turn with an American aspiring writer whose summer plans in Scotland lead her to a castle and an unexpected connection with a prince. Different setting, same interest in people making room for themselves in worlds that have already decided where they belong.

Morgan has continued to work as an editor while writing novels, and publisher biographies place her in Brooklyn, New York. It's a fitting double life for a writer whose stories pay attention to both the big premise and the people inside it.
