Author bio
Rachel Morgan was born in South Africa and grew up on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast, in Maidstone near Tongaat. As a kid, she spent a lot of time in her own made-up worlds, dreaming up fantasy stories long before publishing felt like a real job.
For a while, though, she took the practical route. She studied biochemistry and genetics at the University of Cape Town, then started a master's in biochemistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Lab work taught her discipline, but it also showed her something important: she didn't want to spend her life doing research that left no room for imagination.
That shift did not happen all at once. During those science years, she kept circling back to the kind of books she actually loved, stories full of magic, adventure, romance, and strong emotional stakes. Realizing she wanted to write those kinds of books, not the kind she thought she was supposed to write, was the turning point.
So she left the master's program and made room for fiction.
Before writing full time, Morgan taught maths at Inanda Seminary High School. She did that for about three and a half years, first full time and then part time, using the quieter hours to build a writing life book by book. Her debut novel, The Faerie Guardian, arrived in 2012, and the follow-up books The Faerie Prince and The Faerie War helped turn Creepy Hollow into the series many readers still know her for best.
Those books show a lot of what Morgan does well. Her stories tend to move quickly, but they stay close to a young heroine trying to work out who she is, who she can trust, and what her power might cost. Hidden magical worlds, secrets, first love, friendship, betrayal, and the long road to forgiveness come up again and again.
She did not stay in one lane, either. After Creepy Hollow, she branched into the near-future fantasy of Elemental Thief, the fairy-tale noir feel of The Memory Thief, the darker World of Guardians novel From Storm and Shadow, and later the softer, cozier romantic fantasy of Tempests & Tea Leaves, Deals & Dream Spells, and Love & Letter Charms.
Morgan also writes contemporary romance under the name Rochelle Morgan. Books like The Trouble with Flying and the rest of The Trouble series trade fae courts and outlawed magic for South African campuses, awkward crushes, fake dating, and the sometimes messy business of growing up. Even when the setting changes, her interest stays much the same: characters trying to become braver, kinder, and a little more honest with themselves.
Science may have trained her brain, but story clearly won.
These days she lives in Cape Town with her husband, daughter, and three miniature dachshunds. She still writes for young adults and readers who are simply young at heart, and her books still carry that same spark that seems to have been there from the start, the wish to step sideways out of ordinary life and into someplace a little stranger, warmer, and more magical.
